A Reminder: Memento Mori
One of the most powerful ideas I encountered in both Stoic philosophy and Buddhism is the reminder that life is impermanent.
The Stoics called it ‘Memento Mori’ – remember that you will die. Buddhism & Hinduism teaches a similar truth: much of our suffering comes from forgetting the fleeting nature of life and becoming attached to what cannot last forever.
This is not a pessimistic idea. It does not mean that life is meaningless. Quite the opposite.
When we remember that our time is limited, everything becomes more meaningful. The conversation with a friend. The embrace of a loved one. The disagreement that suddenly seems less important. The ordinary moments we usually overlook.
Mortality gives weight to our choices and sharpens our appreciation for the present. It reminds us to love more deeply, forgive more quickly, take more chances, and spend our days on what truly matters.
Life becomes more vivid, more purposeful, and more beautiful when we remember that it will not last forever.
